Goodbye May

Somehow, it's already the last day of May?!
Hope you all are staying cool. It's so hot outside! Gwendolyn had her first dip in her little pool (thanks to her Grammy) at her Nana's house today. She loved the pictures on the bottom of it, but we're not sure how much she enjoyed the soak itself. Either way, she looked adorable in her suit!
May was a very fun month for us! Gwendolyn started playing much more and putting things into her mouth! She was introduced to her swing, jumper and many new hand held toys. We celebrated our first Mother's Day, Memorial Day and began yoga classes together!

I'm still working on compiling 365 pictures of her, one for each day of each month during her first year! Take a peek at May's 31 pictures below.

Breastfeeding

We have been really busy... it's that time of year! There's been lots going on but mostly, it feels like I've been breastfeeding. And pumping. And then breastfeeding some more.

Gwendolyn has been exclusively breast fed these past 4 months. I feel fortunate that it worked out and I have been able to feed her this way but it is A LOT of work! I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I would not change my decision but there's some things books, blogs and your friends and family just do not tell you!

Here's a little (actually, long) walk through my breast feeding journey.

January
Gwendolyn was only alive 4 days. These first few days were filled with lots of skin to skin contact, on demand feeding and ups and downs. Incredible and exhausting. I didn't really worry about the details. I had the luxury of nurses to watch over everything, monitor feedings and weight gain and tell me what I was doing wrong (or right)!

When I found out I'd have a C-section one of my main concerns was not being able to nurse right away as the parenting classes told us how critical this first skin to skin contact was for bonding and breastfeeding success. But when it came down to it, I was able to feed her within an hour of her birth and she immediately latched! She ate for an hour. It was an amazing and magical time!

One the second or third day (it's all a blur now) she was feeding every hour and still not satisfied. Nurses explained my milk was not coming in fast enough to give her enough to maintain her weight. We had to supplement with formula because she had lost too much and developed a fever. I worried all my breastfeeding dreams were shot but after one night of supplementation (Chris fed her these bottles), she bounced back and we've been fine ever since.
February
Once we were shipped out of the hospital, reality hit. I now had to remember when and how long she was eating, how many times per day, how many diapers and which breast I last fed all on my own?! My sister in law mentioned her friend using an app on her iPhone which I immediately researched, downloaded and put to good use!

It's called Baby Nursing by Sevenlogics and it's a lifesaver! The app is so useful because it times your feedings, tracks which breast you last fed on and gives you monthly stats for how long you nursed (these numbers are CRAZY) and how many feedings you completed. Definitely a nursing Mommy Must-have and makes you look like you know what you're doing come check-up time! Even better, it's free.

We got home and I found my way (with Chris' support) through these first few weeks. Something no one mentions often is that breastfeeding is painful! It's not terrible, but it does hurt. And I don't think it's only when the baby is latched incorrectly (which is what I read all over the internet). By week 3 I wanted to throw in the towel and quit. I scoured the internet for information and pictures of proper latching. Every time we started a feeding and Gwen would begin to latch, I'd brace myself for the pain and lose my breath for a few seconds.

I'm happy I stuck with it, because the pain passed. I think some of the pictures and tutorials I saw online helped with latching (and Lanolin cream and soothing pads) too. All the emotions and agony that came with breastfeeding was worth it at our one week and one month check-ups, when Dr. Kumar told us Gwendolyn was healthy and gaining weight!
{Stats for February: 241 feedings x approximately 20 minutes per feeding = 4,716.9 minutes spent breastfeeding}
March
Gwendolyn began going longer in between feedings. Sometimes 4 hours. There was no more pain or sore/swollen/hot breasts. We waited until 4 weeks or so before giving her a pacifier which helped some. I also began pumping this month which allowed Chris to start giving her a bottle each night before bed. Having his help for just one feeding per day really felt wonderful and provided some essential bonding time for baby and daddy!

Pumping came pretty easily and I was able to borrow my sister's pump which saved us the expense! Another disclaimer: lots of supplies are necessary for pumping and storing breastmilk. Reality also hit. In my dream world, Gwendolyn would have breastmilk until she turned a year old but I would not be pumping when I went back to work in September. Once I started pumping, I realized this little notion of mine was not realistic at all. I went into a pumping frenzie and began freezing as much as possible. Luckily, I have a lot of milk in which to do so.

Our freezer is packed with milk but it still will not be enough for my plan to come to fruition. I'm going to see how it goes through the summer and make a decision closer to September. I will either continue pumping (throughout the day, while at work which seems like a nightmare) or we will have to supplement with formula.

While I do not think it will be the end of the world if I stop pumping and we start formula, this site which has a timeline of breastfed babies lists all of the benefits (that I'd never heard about) of breastfeeding for specific lengths of time during the baby's first year, really has me wanting to stretch this out as long as possible. It's incredible to see what diseases and other ailments breast milk protects children against as babies and later in life!
{Stats for March: 245 feedings x approximately 23 minutes per feeding = 5,617.3  minutes spent breastfeeding}
April
By April we were really getting into the swing of things! Gwendolyn and I were on the same page, Chris had his bedtime and bottle routine down and our pumping and freezing system was in full swing! Then her 3 month growth spurt hit... Our schedule and routine went out the window and we were basically starting from scratch again.

She was waking up at random times in the middle of the night and during the day. She was not nursing at specific times either. We had to change around her bed time as she was either totally melting down at night or wide awake. I also was not able to pump and store as much because Gwendolyn was eating so much more frequently. (The stats do not depict this, but keep in mind Chris was now giving her at least 1 bottle per day)
{Stats for April: 209 feedings x approximately 24 minutes per feeding = 5,065.1 minutes spent breastfeeding}
May
This month we have attempted to get into more of a routine. It seems to have worked its way out and we're getting into a consistent schedule, but still not completely there. Her growth spurt has definitely passed and I've read babies are much more efficient at feeding now, which cuts down on their time on the breast. This seems to be true for Gwendolyn although again, the stats do not reflect this as they show her now eating for longer than she has in past months!

We have begun giving Gwendolyn bottles (of breastmilk) at other times of day, not just night. When we're out for extended periods I usually bring a bottle or two. But then this impacts my milk production so it's tricky. If I skip feeding her on the breast I should be pumping instead. I'm cautious now and still figuring it out because I do not want to decrease my milk supply.

With the hot summer months coming up (or here now, as it was 90 today) I'm not sure how well breastfeeding will go with a hot and sweaty momma and baby but plenty of people do it, right? I find myself not using the app as often now that we are in a routine, but still have some stats to share.

{Stats for May: 192 feedings x approximately 26 minutes per feeding = 4,910.4  minutes spent breastfeeding}

And finally, a grand total of the past 4 months of breastfeeding:
{Combined Stats for February-May: 887 feedings x approximately 23 minutes per feeding = 20,309.7 minutes spent breastfeeding}
I am really proud of myself for sticking to it and accomplishing this goal. It's certainly not easy but absolutely worth it. Gwendolyn is happy and healthy, gaining weight. Plus, we've saved a ton of money too! :)

I had intended to give you a list of supplies I've found essential for breastfeeding but that'll have to wait for another post... because it's time to nurse again!

4 Months

Happy 4 month "birthday" to our beautiful baby girl!
It's hard to believe 4 months have gone this quickly. In a little over 3 months we will be saying goodbye to summer and to my maternity leave and hello to another school year and daycare.

A lot has changed. She is starting to be more comfortable and friendly towards friends and extended family... even sharing her smiles with people she has never seen! Everything (EVERYTHING) goes into her mouth. (In case you couldn't tell from the picture, she's mid-lift of her dress to get a mouth full of it!) While I do not think she is teething yet, she is definitely exploring everything.

Gwen seems like a very social baby. She is constantly looking around, taking things in and noticing new people/sounds in her environment. She has different types of smiles and does a lot more "talking" to us now. She really enjoys being with people over any type of toy and is often content just sitting and "talking" with us while we are out or home.

We do not know her weight for sure (she sees the doctor next week) but she's about 13 pounds and beginning to outgrow some of her 3 month-sized clothing. Many of her pants are getting too short, which is the only real indication we notice in her change in length (can I call it height?!).

Sleep is still scarce. As I write this, I cannot believe I have not slept longer than about 5 hours in 4 months! Or that I am able to function with that little sleep. Gwendolyn has been up every 3 hours during the night for the past few weeks. Napping is a crap shoot. Some days she does great, other days she has no naps. But, no matter how long or little she she sleeps, her temperament is pretty consistent: happy and content! I cannot complain.

This time with Gwendolyn has been so amazing, I would not change it for the world. Each day is filled with fun and smiles! A third of her first year has already passed. While I cannot wait to see what the future brings, I am extremely grateful for the memories we have made thus far.

Happy Memorial Day!

Happy Memorial Day!

This is one of our favorite holiday weekends of the year. Two years ago we were moving into our first home! We had our friends and family over to celebrate and thus began our annual tradition of starting the summer off right with a cookout at our house!

A month after we moved into our house, Winston came. Now two years later, Gwendolyn is here! Life has certainly changed a bit from when we were just moving our things in and setting up our home. It's amazing to see how far we have come and what we have accomplished.

Each of these accomplishments can be partially attributed to those men and women who have served our country. Hope everyone had a great weekend honoring and celebrating!

Picture Overload

This week flew by! I can't believe it's already Friday. The awesome thing about maternity leave is that every day is my "Friday!" While it's awesome, this maternity leave is flying by and I'm sad to see another week pass.

June is almost here?? I know I still have a while off but, I already look back at pictures from January, amazed at how quick the time has flown. It really feels like yesterday we were headed to MGH to have our baby.

Luckily, we've taken millions of pictures along the way (no, really probably a million) to document it all! We got some really cute ones this week. I can't pick a favorite. Can you?!
Mornings with Gwendolyn are a blessing
In her swing with her "BFF" the monkey
I'm not sure there's anything cuter than a my sleeping baby
She loves to stand and "talk" which she's doing in this picture
Sitting up (propped) is also a current thrill
This is precious... I wish I could read her mind
Pulls at the heartstrings
I came across another mom's blog this week and saw a great idea she has. She's making a book of 365 pictures of her son. She puts together "calendars" of an entire month's worth of pictures of her son. When the year is over, she'll have 365 pictures of him and a visual tracking of how much he's grown and all the amazing memories along the way.

It's too good not to steal create myself, for Gwendolyn. I'm trying to catch up a bit but I've finished January's. Gwen was only alive 4 days that month, but since it was her birthday, I figured we could have 31 days worth of photos, right?!

Our Little Yogi

We had our first yoga class this week! Gwen and I had a blast during our "mommy & me" yoga and are looking forward to next week's class.

We had to introduce ourselves and share what our little ones have been doing lately. Gwendolyn has been "talking" up a storm so I shared this news with everyone. She proved me right by babbling through the entire class!

The only time she quieted was when we sang! Since everyone was signing the same song in unison, I think she was quiet to hear us and she loved listening. She seems so in tune to music.

It was so cute to see her and the other babies staring at each other. It's the longest amount of time she's spent around other babies her age. There was one boy there and Gwendolyn's eyes were glued to him practically the entire time! He was a little cutie, but hopefully that's not a sign of what's to come.
Gwen, after her first yoga class!
By the end of the hour she was exhausted. I think it's safe to say she enjoyed herself. Looks like we have a little yogi on our hands! Wonder if her first word will be namaste?

Happy Mother's Day!

This weekend last year we got our first clue that I might, might, miiiiight be pregnant. While celebrating Mother's Day with my in-laws, I got nauseous and dizzy out of nowhere. It went away quickly, but hoping for good news we took a pregnancy test the next day. It came back negative.

Fast forward to the week after Memorial Day, when I should have gotten my period and it never came. Chris, being the amazing husband that he is practically raced me to the drug store to purchase one three pregnancy tests and they all came back positive! (I really took two, had positive results and being skeptical, waited to take the third the next day before agreeing to call my doctor)

We were both in shock. How could we be so lucky!? We got pregnant after "officially trying" for just a few weeks. A week later my doctor's appointment confirmed what we already knew and the rest is history! I swear it happened so quickly, Chris and I had a hard time really believing we were pregnant before seeing the first ultrasound!

Now here we are, a year later. My pregnancy has come and gone and we have a beautiful, amazing baby girl. What a blessing being a mother is. Celebrating this holiday for the first time as someone's mother is an incredible feeling. I received so many texts, phone calls, cards and gifts today and appreciate everyone's kind thoughts.

Gwendolyn and Chris spoiled me today as did the weather. What started off as a gloomy and rainy day really opened up to a beautiful afternoon. We spent the morning as a family relaxing and opening gifts! I was given a book I've been wanting to read and "mommy and me yoga" classes I wanted to take! I can't wait to do yoga with Gwendolyn.
My mother and brothers came over for brunch and we enjoyed strawberry pancakes and more gift opening. After they left and the weather improved, we headed to the walking trail in our town with both my babies: Gwendolyn and Winston. We crammed them both in the back of our car and headed out for a lovely walk together.
Later we watched a movie, had quesadillas for dinner and gave Gwen a bath before singing her to sleep. (Her current favorite lullaby is "American Baby" by Dave Matthews Band) Chris kept the gifts coming by doing all of the dishes and getting me ice cream for dessert! What a lucky girl mom I am.
My first Mother's Day is in the books. This past year has been an incredible journey and it's just the beginning! Hope your Mother's Day was all you hoped it would be.

In the Swing of Things

Our sweet baby girl gave her mommy an early Mother's Day gift! Gwendolyn went back to her amazing, lengthy nighttime sleep routine this week! I'm happy to report she slept 5-6 hours straight each night. (WHY is this considered "sleeping through the night"?!).

While things are not perfect, 5 straight hours of sleep feels incredible! Now that she is sleeping longer at night, daytime naps have decreased to a few 20-30 minute naps throughout the day. I'll take it... for now.

After a few nights of Gwendolyn crying for two hours before finally going to sleep, we took the hint (I know, we're a little slow) and held off on putting her down for the night until much later. Chris is really good about getting her ready for and all tucked in to bed. He really enjoys his nightly routine and bottle time with Gwen!

I am envious of people who have babies that sleep the entire night and then nap 2-3 hours twice a day. Right now I'm barely able to wash the dishes, do a quick workout or get a shower in before our little cherub's naps are over! As someone who thrives on routine, this is not easy. But, I know it'll pass quickly and I would not change these days with Gwendolyn for anything.

Since Gwendolyn is awake much more lately, we have stayed pretty busy! (I'm lucky she enjoys running errands with me) She is a pretty active baby who likes to "sit up" and see all the action! She seemed ready to introduced her to the swing this week!

How cute are these pictures?! It wasn't easy to get a steady shot since she was jumping all over the place but she has been having a blast! True to form, she also had to bend over and put her mouth on the tray to get a taste as well!

It's starting to feel like we are getting into the swing of this parenting thing. It's certainly a challenge but the most wonderful one I've ever attempted. Looking forward to celebrating my first Mother's Day on Sunday!

Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there!

Getting Mouthy

One of Gwendolyn's favorite things to do lately is give kisses put everything into her mouth. Toys, fists, blankets, clothes, faces... you name it!

This little one is certainly exploring her world and trying to figure out all that she can! While she's very slobbery, it's hard to resist. We like to pretend she wants to give us a kiss. Once she makes eye contact, she opens wide and tries to get a mouth full!
"Getting mouthy" with Chris
Here are some of the toys and products we've found very useful for this fun drool filled stage!
Oball Sassy Sensory Ball Set Nuby Teether BabyGanics Cleaner Upper Sofie the Giraffe
Gwendolyn absolutely loves the Oballs that we received as gifts. This one with the rattle built in tops her list. The openings allow her to grasp onto it easily and she loves to suck on the rattle part!

We made the switch to organic cleaners once Gwen arrived so we can keep the use of chemicals to a minimum (I'm not ready to say goodbye to the bathroom heavy duty cleaners just yet and gagged when using vinegar to wash the floors) in the house. We really like the BabyGanics line of products for cleaning toys, dishes and even bath time!

Beach Baby

Hope everyone had a nice weekend! We were busy doing yard work, spring cleaning and catching up on sleep!

Gwendolyn boycotted all naps on Saturday, sleeping for only 30 minutes a stretch. We used this weekend to start putting her to sleep in her bedroom. Until now, she has gone down each night in the co-sleeper in our room. We planned to have her sleep in her crib until she wakes for her first feeding, to get her used to her room... At least that was our plan.

She slept in the crib for 2 hours Friday night, a half hour on Saturday night and not at all on Sunday! Talk about baby steps! I'll admit we have no will power in having her "cry it out". That will come in time. I don't honestly think she is ready to soothe herself just yet and hope eventually she will be capable of sleeping longer stretches in her room.

Despite lack of sleep, Chris and I decided to do a day trip to the Cape on Sunday. We enjoyed relaxing on the beach listening the ocean, strolled in the sand for a while and then walked the Cape Cod Canal. We visited downtown Falmouth and had a nice lunch.
Gwendolyn is so fair skinned I am paranoid about exposing her to the sun, so she's all covered up in these pictures! The weather was still fairly cool and if you could not tell, windy! She flinches like a terrified vampire whenever she is out in the sun but I'm sure it won't be long before our babe is in her swim suit, splashing in the water!

May Day!

As we welcome May, it's clear we have hit turbulence with Gwendolyn. Our baby girl who was once enjoying 5-6 hour stretches of beauty sleep each night has turned into an utter milk monster and is demanding feedings at least every 3 hours this week!
It's hard to believe it's only Wednesday. I feel like I've been on a no-sleep bender for so much longer. From what I've read, it seems this is just a growth spurt. I'm sad to say she is fitting snugly into her 3 month clothing and very close to needing the next size up diapers. I know it'll pass quickly but these sleepless nights are exhausting! Last night she ate every other hour.
Luckily, hunger is her only symptom (I know it could be A LOT worse). She is so darn sweet and adorable, and she's even begun rolling onto her back and tummy this week! I'd like to elaborate but Chris just put Gwen down for the night and (yawn) I've got to take advantage!
Happy May to you all! G'night.
